Zero-Tolerance Safety: How Lehmann Marine Scales Maritime Battery Reliability Through Laser Precision

By Staff Report · 1 min

The industrialization of the maritime battery supply chain is moving beyond simple assembly toward high-precision manufacturing. Lehmann Marine has underscored this shift by showcasing its use of TRUMPF’s Programmable Focusing Optics (PFO), an advanced laser welding system that utilizes integrated camera technology to correct cell positioning deviations in real time.

In the demanding maritime environment, where Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) must withstand constant vibration and thermal cycling, the integrity of cell-to-busbar connections is paramount. Any tolerance deviation in the welding of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) modules can lead to increased internal resistance, thermal hotspots, and potential system failure. By eliminating these risks at the production stage, Lehmann Marine is reinforcing the reliability of its CUBE and AQUBE systems.

This manufacturing milestone is particularly relevant as European shipowners face the FuelEU Maritime mandate, which begins its GHG intensity reductions in 2025. Reliable, high-capacity batteries are essential not only for full-electric ferries—such as those Lehmann is supplying for HADAG in Hamburg but also as quayside buffers for Onshore Power Supply (OPS) infrastructure. As the company scales its annual production capacity to 300 MWh, the integration of automated, zero-defect welding technology positions it as a key supplier in the EU’s quest for a 90% shore-power-ready port network by 2030.
