Volvo Penta’s ZEM Bet: Scaling the Modular Driveline for a Decarbonised Fleet

The transition from fossil-fuel dominance to a digitized, electric maritime industry is often hindered by the lack of modular, safe, and cost-effective integration.

Norway’s ZEM now backed by the industrial muscle of Volvo Penta has positioned itself as the corrective force in this market, moving beyond simple battery supply to offer fully integrated electric and hybrid drivelines.

While the industry grapples with the 2030 mandates, ZEM is focusing on the immediate operational logic of high-speed ferries, aquaculture workboats, and offshore lifeboats.

By leveraging the AKAZEM line a technology derivative of large-scale automotive series production ZEM provides a "Lego-like" scalability that allows shipowners to bypass the bespoke engineering costs that typically sink electrification business cases.

The acquisition by Volvo Penta in 2021 has transformed ZEM from a specialized consultant into a global systems provider. This partnership isn't just about capital; it’s about the fusion of ZEM's high-spec energy storage expertise with a global service network. In a market projected to hit $1.69 billion by 2032, ZEM is betting that the winning formula isn't just a better battery, but a smarter, more reliable way to plug it into the ship’s existing DNA.
