Energy & Major Projects SpecialistESC Group
Biography

Catherine Hurley is a Chartered Engineer with more than 20 years' experience in the energy sector, spanning renewables, thermal generation and LNG to power.

She was responsible for developing Malta's LNG to power plant at Electrogas Malta, a project which changed the country's electricity supply landscape, slashing emissions from power generation, and delivering long term energy security for a growing economy. Her role covered the full project lifecycle, from early development and commercial structuring through financing, construction and into operations.

Catherine has since advised on energy and infrastructure projects internationally, across Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. She works with developers, utilities and investors to structure projects, manage risk and bring them to investment and ultimately to operation.

She currently works with ESC Group, leading and advising on its energy businesses and major projects. This includes Malta's shore to ship power facility at the Port of Valletta, letting cruise ships switch off their engines and draw power from the grid while berthed, significantly cutting emissions in the harbour.

Catherine also serves in non executive director and board advisory roles, where she combines engineering depth with commercial and governance experience. Her focus is on de-risking major projects and delivering the energy transition in practice.

OPS Under Load: Proactive Failure Identification and Downtime Reduction Strategies

As OPS systems scale, failure risks shift from isolated faults to system-wide vulnerabilities. This session examines how ports and operators can detect early warning signals, prioritise critical components, and implement redundancy strategies. Focus is placed on minimising downtime through predictive maintenance, system monitoring, and coordinated operational response.
