Carlo Micallef is a distinguished tourism leader with 30 years of experience at the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), complemented by valuable expertise gained across a range of positions within the Authority, both in Head Office as well as in overseas missions. Renowned for his strategic acumen and transformative leadership, he has played a pivotal role in shaping Malta’s tourism landscape and strengthening the destination’s position as a leading global tourism hub. A key architect of Malta’s modern tourism marketing strategy, Carlo spearheaded transformative initiatives during his tenure as Chief Marketing Officer from 2014 to 2022, leading the Authority through a period of significant innovation, brand development, change management and international growth. His strategic vision and leadership were instrumental in enhancing Malta’s position as a leading Mediterranean destination.
In May 2022, Carlo was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Malta Tourism Authority and entrusted with leading the recovery and revitalisation of Malta’s tourism industry in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, Malta and Gozo have achieved remarkable tourism performance, emerging among the world’s strongest tourism success stories and setting new benchmarks for sustainable growth, destination appeal, and international competitiveness.
