The Future is Standard: Godby Shipping Sets New Benchmark with Shore Power & Battery-Ready Ro-Ros

Analysis: The Rise of the "Future-Proof" Ro-Ro

Vessel Class: Stream RoRo 1700

Shipyard: CIMC Raffles (China)

Partners: Technolog Services (Hamburg)

In a move that signals a permanent shift in the short-sea shipping landscape, Finnish operator Godby Shipping has officially ordered two next-generation Stream RoRo 1700 vessels from CIMC Raffles in China. This order, finalized in mid-February 2026, represents a bold step away from "traditional" fleet renewals and toward a future where electrification is no longer an optional add-on, but a core architectural requirement.

Engineering for the Energy Transition

The Stream RoRo 1700 design, developed in collaboration with Technolog Services, is built specifically to outpace upcoming European environmental mandates. These vessels aren't just "ready" for the green transition—they are built to lead it.

Key Technical Highlights:

  • Zero-Emission Port Stays: Equipped with high-capacity Onshore Power Supply (OPS) connections as a factory standard, allowing the ships to eliminate auxiliary engine emissions entirely while at the quay.
  • Expandable Battery Architecture: The vessels feature a modular battery system. This allows Godby to scale up energy storage as battery technology improves, potentially moving from peak-shaving today to full-electric transits in the future.
  • Extreme Efficiency: Despite having the same fuel consumption as Godby’s older vessels, the Stream 1700 offers nearly double the cargo capacity (1,700 lane meters), drastically reducing the carbon footprint per ton-kilometer.
  • Arctic-Ready Decarbonization: With a Finnish/Swedish Ice Class 1A rating, these ships prove that electrification and high-performance battery systems can handle the brutal conditions of the Baltic Sea winters.

Why the Market is Watching

The "Godby Model" is catching the eye of port authorities and investors alike. By integrating shore power and batteries at the construction stage, Godby is hedging against the rising costs of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and ensuring early compliance with FuelEU Maritime and AFIR regulations.

This order confirms a growing trend among Ro-Ro owners: the days of "diesel-only" newbuilds are over. For short-sea operators, the ability to operate silently and cleanly in urban ports like Helsinki, Stockholm, or Tallinn is becoming a vital competitive advantage.

The Bottom Line

Godby Shipping isn't just buying new boats; they are investing in infrastructure on water. By making shore power and batteries the standard, they are challenging the rest of the industry to stop "waiting and seeing" and start building for the reality of 2030.
