Ingeteam Marine Powers Taranto’s "Green Pier" Transformation

The Port of Taranto is marking a decisive milestone in its energy transition roadmap with the "Cold Ironing – Public Piers" project. Central to this transformation is Ingeteam Marine, which is deploying its advanced power electronics to eliminate berthing emissions and modernize one of Italy's most strategic maritime hubs.

In collaboration with Two Smart Building, Ingeteam is installing a high-capacity Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system designed to serve a diverse fleet of ferries, container vessels, and cruise ships.

Engineering the 24 MVA Connection

The technical core of the project focuses on high-efficiency frequency conversion and voltage management, allowing international vessels to seamlessly sync with the local Italian grid.

  • Frequency Conversion: The heart of the installation features two INGEGRID™ MV100 water-cooled frequency converters.
  • Power Density: Each converter is rated at 12 MVA, providing a combined 24 MVA of available power at the public piers.
  • Thermal Management: The water-cooled design is specifically chosen for high-power maritime applications, ensuring stable performance and longevity in the demanding Mediterranean coastal environment.
  • Voltage Infrastructure: The scope includes a 12.6 MVA step-down transformer (20 kV / 3.15 kV) and a 12 MVA step-up transformer (3.1 kV / 6–11 kV) to facilitate multi-vessel compatibility.

Impact: 30,000 Tonnes of Co2 Avoided

The shift to "Cold Ironing" allows ships to shut down their auxiliary diesel engines while docked, drawing clean electricity directly from the shore. The environmental and operational benefits for Taranto are substantial:

  • Emission Reductions: Once fully operational, the system is expected to help avoid up to 30,000 tonnes of Co2 emissions annually.
  • Urban Air Quality: The project significantly reduces noise pollution and local emissions of nitrogen oxides NoX and particulate matter, improving life for the surrounding community.
  • Operational Excellence: The 24 MVA capacity ensures that Taranto can service the high-energy demands of modern cruise ships and large container carriers simultaneously.

Timeline to 2026

The project is currently on track for completion in 2026. By delivering this infrastructure, Ingeteam Marine is not only supporting Taranto’s sustainability goals but also reinforcing its own role as a key technology supplier in the European port electrification landscape.
