Cavotec Secures €3 Million Shore Power Order to Electrify Southern Italian Ports

Cavotec has officially announced a new €3 million contract to supply advanced Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems to several key ports across Southern Italy.

This strategic investment marks a significant step forward in the Mediterranean’s transition toward zero-emission maritime operations, focusing on the high-traffic cruise, container, and RoRo segments.

The order includes a comprehensive suite of Cavotec’s modular "Power" technologies, including PowerMove, PowerReach, and PowerFeed. These systems are designed to offer maximum flexibility, allowing ports to accommodate various vessel types and sizes while ensuring rapid, safe electrical connections at the quayside.

CEO Insight on Mediterranean Growth

Commenting on the expansion, David Pagels, CEO of Cavotec, highlighted the importance of modularity in meeting rapid regulatory shifts:

"This order further strengthens our position in the Mediterranean market. It reflects the growing demand for shore power solutions as ports and operators work to reduce emissions and comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations like AFIR."

Strategic Impact for Southern Italy

The deployment of these systems is a direct response to the European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which mandates that major ports provide shore-side electricity to at least 90% of container and passenger vessel calls by 2030.

By equipping Southern Italian ports with mobile and fixed connection points, Cavotec is enabling these hubs to significantly reduce local air pollution—specifically nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter—which often impact densely populated port cities. The flexibility of the PowerMove units, in particular, allows terminal operators to manage berth space more efficiently without compromising on environmental targets.

Technical Specifications at a Glance

  • PowerMove: Mobile shore power units for flexible quay positioning.
  • PowerReach: Fixed-boom systems for high-capacity, heavy-duty connections.
  • PowerFeed: Automated cable management to streamline the "plug-in" process.

The project is slated for rollout over the next 18 months, positioning these Southern Italian gateways as leaders in the regional push for a "Green Mediterranean" corridor.
