The Luxury of Decarbonisation: Explora Journeys and Fincantieri Accelerate a New Blue Frontier

GENOA, ITALY — In a landmark "triple ceremony" at the Sestri Ponente shipyard, Explora Journeys and Fincantieri advanced the evolution of luxury travel, marking three massive construction milestones for the brand’s next-generation fleet. The event featuring the technical launch (float out) of Explora IV, the coin ceremony for Explora V, and the steel cutting of Explora VI serves as a physical manifestation of the MSC Group’s multi-billion euro investment in a zero-emission maritime future.

A Vision Beyond Luxury

"Sustainability is the new craftsmanship. By integrating hydrogen fuel cells and LNG today, we are ensuring that the 'Ocean State of Mind' is preserved for the generations who will sail these seas long after us." — Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman, Cruise Division of MSC Group

The Triple Milestone of 2026

The March 9, 2026 ceremony signifies that for the first time, all six vessels in the Explora Journeys fleet are either in active service or under simultaneous construction. This industrial pace is matched by the technical complexity of the ships themselves:

  • EXPLORA IV (Float Out): Scheduled for delivery in 2027, this vessel is now entering its final outfitting phase. It is built with a sophisticated Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) propulsion system, designed to transition to bio-LNG or synthetic LNG as they become available.
  • EXPLORA V (Coin Ceremony): This milestone marks a pivot toward extreme energy flexibility. Explora V will be built "hydrogen-ready," allowing for the future integration of the 6 MW fuel cell technology being premiered on its sister ship.
  • EXPLORA VI (Steel Cutting): The crown jewel of the fleet’s engineering, Explora VI will be delivered in 2028 with a fully integrated hydrogen fuel cell. This system will allow the ship to operate with "zero emissions in port," powering all hotel operations from lighting to air conditioning while the main engines remain completely silent.

The MSC Sustainability Mandate: A €7 Billion Commitment

The construction of the Explora fleet is the vanguard of a broader MSC Group Sustainability Strategy that aims for Net-Zero GHG emissions by 2050. The group’s investment in Fincantieri for these six ships alone totals approximately €3.5 billion, part of a larger €7 billion investment in Italian shipbuilding that includes the MSC Seaside and Seascape classes.

Key MSC Sustainability Credentials (2024-2026):

  • Energy Transition Plan (ETP): MSC is the first major cruise division to publish an independently verified ETP, outlining absolute emission reduction targets toward 2050.
  • Shore Power Leadership: By the end of 2024, MSC increased its shore power connections to 142 across 13 ports. All new Explora and MSC vessels are delivered shore-power ready.
  • Methane Slip Mitigation: The LNG engines on Explora V and VI utilise a new generation of internal combustion technology specifically designed to tackle methane slip, a critical hurdle in LNG decarbonisation.
  • Operational Intelligence: Through tools like OptiCruise, MSC avoided 50,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2024 by optimising real-time routing and speed.

The Strategic Network: Sestri Ponente as a Green Hub

The partnership with Fincantieri extends beyond the hull. In Liguria alone, 800 suppliers form part of a specialized industrial chain dedicated to these high-complexity builds. This collaboration ensures that the "Blue Economy" provides 70,000 jobs across Italy while pioneering the technology required to decarbonize the global maritime sector.

📊 Impact at a Glance: Explora Journeys & MSC Sustainability

  • 🌬️ Zero-Emission Port Stays – Achieved on Explora VI via a 6 MW hydrogen fuel cell.
  • ⚡ Shore Power Adoption – 142 connections active fleet-wide, eliminating direct emissions while docked.
  • 📉 Intensity Reduction – A 33.5% decrease in carbon emissions intensity since 2008, tracking ahead of IMO 2030 targets.
  • 🏗️ Industrial Scale – €3.5bn investment in six ultra-luxury ships, all featuring LNG-powered capabilities.
  • 🪸 Biodiversity – Continued coral restoration at Ocean Cay, protecting 64 square miles of marine environment.

The triple ceremony in Genoa confirms that Explora Journeys is the testing ground for the maritime technologies that will define the next century. By marrying Italian seafaring artistry with MSC’s rigorous decarbonization roadmap, the industry has reached a point of no return: luxury is now synonymous with responsibility.
