The Port of Marseille Fos has officially inaugurated its latest shore power facilities, marking a decisive step in the Mediterranean’s energy transition. With the MSC World Europa serving as the flagship for the ceremony, the collaboration highlights the critical role of port electrification in eliminating at-berth emissions and meeting stringent EU maritime regulations.

The Mediterranean maritime landscape reached a significant decarbonization milestone this week as the Port of Marseille Fos officially commissioned its new Onshore Power Supply (OPS) infrastructure. The inauguration ceremony, attended by national representatives and MSC Group executives, signals a shift toward "cold ironing" as the standard for major European cruise hubs.

Central to the event was the MSC World Europa, the first LNG-powered vessel in the MSC Cruises fleet and one of the most technologically advanced ships currently in operation. By connecting to the Marseille grid, the vessel can shut down its internal combustion engines entirely while in port, eliminating localized CO2, NOx, and particulate matter emissions.

As Michele Francioni, Chief Energy Transition Officer, MSC Group’s Cruise Division, noted:

“I am very proud and happy to see all the hard work of all the parties involved has resulted in what we have seen here in Marseille. The investment in infrastructure here at the Port highlights the importance shore plays in improving air quality in port communities.”

For Marseille, the investment is a direct response to the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which mandates shore-side electricity for passenger ships in major EU ports by 2030. As the industry faces increasing pressure from the FuelEU Maritime regulation starting in 2025, such port-side investments are becoming the essential backbone of a sustainable cruise strategy.

Technical Specifications & Sustainability Credentials

Port of Marseille Fos (OPS Infrastructure):

  • Target Segment: Specifically engineered for large-scale cruise vessels at the Mediterranean terminals.
  • Grid Integration: Developed through a partnership between port authorities and national grid operators to ensure high-voltage stability.
  • Regulatory Alignment: Designed to meet AFIR requirements for TEN-T core ports, facilitating 90% shore power coverage by 2030.

MSC Cruises Sustainability Profile (MSC World Europa):

  • Shore Power Ready: Entirely equipped with an integrated shore-to-ship power connection (standard across all new MSC builds since 2017).
  • Primary Fuel: Powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), reducing SOx by 99% and NOx by 85%.
  • Advanced Tech: Features a 150-kilowatt Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) demonstrator, the first of its kind on a cruise ship, testing the future of hydrogen-based power.
  • Wastewater Management: Equipped with an Advanced Wastewater Treatment System (AWTS) that meets the "Baltic Standard" (the highest global requirement).
