Cádiz Takes the Lead: Spain’s First Shore Power Facility for Cruise Ships Goes Live
By Staff Report

CÁDIZ, SPAIN – In a landmark move for the Spanish maritime industry, the Port of Cádiz has officially partnered with energy giant Endesa X to launch the nation’s first Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system dedicated to cruise ships. The project, located at the Alfonso XIII quay, allows massive cruise liners to "plug in" to the local grid, effectively silencing their diesel engines while at berth.
Technical Prowess and Sustainability
The installation features a sophisticated 16 MW modular station developed by Spanish technical specialists Ormazabal and Ingeteam. The system is housed in mobile containers, which minimized the installation footprint and allowed for rapid deployment.
A critical feature of the Cádiz system is its frequency conversion technology, which enables it to switch between 50 Hz and 60 Hz. This ensures that ships from any global fleet—regardless of their internal electrical standards—can connect seamlessly.
Environmental and Economic Impact
The shift to shore-side electricity is expected to have an immediate effect on the city’s air quality. According to data from Puertos del Estado, the connection will reduce:
- Nitrogen Oxides (NOx): 96%
- Particulate Matter (PM): 94%
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2): Up to 64% (utilizing 100% certified renewable energy provided by Endesa).
The total investment for this first phase reached €6.75 million, supported by a €2.7 million grant from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery fund.
The Road to 2030
This project serves as the "pilot" for a broader national strategy. While Cádiz is the first, other major hubs like Barcelona, Valencia, and Algeciras are currently fast-tracking their own electrification plans to meet the 2030 AFIR (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation) requirements.
Teófila Martínez, President of the Cádiz Port Authority, noted that the project is not just about technology but about "urban integration," ensuring that the growth of cruise tourism does not come at the expense of the health and comfort of Cádiz residents.
