Gitte Livbjerg is an independent consultant working across maritime decarbonisation, green shipping corridors, and port energy transitions.
She has worked with ports, governments, and industry on how emerging fuels and electrification can be integrated into operational and infrastructure planning. Previously, she led global green shipping corridor and value‑chain projects at the Maersk Mc‑Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, collaborating with stakeholders across Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Her work focuses on practical, scalable pathways that help ports navigate the shift toward low‑carbon operations and future‑fuel readiness.
Why Storage Is No Longer Optional for Electrified Ports
As ports scale electrification and expand shore power operations, variability in both energy supply and demand introduces significant operational and grid challenges. This session examines the role of energy storage—particularly battery energy storage systems (BESS)—in stabilising load profiles, managing peak demand, and supporting the integration of intermittent renewable energy. It will address system sizing, response times, grid interaction and operational performance, highlighting how storage underpins reliability in continuous, high-load environments. Through practical examples, the discussion will demonstrate why storage has moved from a supplementary solution to a core infrastructure component for ports aiming to deliver resilient, scalable and cost-effective electrification.
